Either a UK PPL with SLMG privileges, or an EASA licence with self-launching privileges, or for TMGs, a TMG privilege. See ‘Pilot Licence Conversion’ for the latest news. Flight in non-EASA aircraft can be counted towards SPL, PPL (A) or LAPL (A) recency. The CAA has published details here. After you’ve successfully flown solo, there’s nothing to stop you becoming a fully qualified glider pilot by completing a training syllabus to achieve the Bronze and Cross-Country endorsements.


You will then hold the equivalent of the Private Pilot’s Licence. Training must be undertaken from a certified instructor, and a license or certificate is then issued by the government, limited to gliders only. The exception is when a pilot is flying under Ultralight (Ultralite) glider rules within the United States. Meanwhile, the BGA intends to support those pilots who choose to hold an EASA sailplane pilots licence.


Gliding licence

According to the British Gliding Association, who are in charge of regulating everything gliding in the UK, there is currently no requirement to hold a glider pilot license if you’re flying in the UK. It is intended for both glider pilots who want to gain an FRTOL (Flight Radio Telephony Operator’s License ) and also for people who already have one but want a refresher. Gliding is a technical sport and to become proficient, you will need to build a wealth of knowledge on topics like soaring techniques and meteorology.


As with all piloting licenses , to obtain your glider license you will also need to be familiar with the theory and essentials of flight, safety, navigation and FAA regulations. Gliding takes place under a mix of national, European and self regulation. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is the EU aviation regulator. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is the UK aviation safety regulator, in which role it standardises the implementation of EASA rules in the UK.


At most clubs, you can expect to pay around £per hour to hire a glider , around £for an aerotow launch and around £for a winch launch. Gliding instruction is provided free of charge at most clubs. It is suitable for glider pilots who wish to use the radio whilst flying cross country. The course is primarily aimed at people without a FRTOL. However, we have found that many pilots who had a FRTOL.


Regulation of gliding is through the British Gliding Association and its affiliated clubs. The UK NPPL has close links with the gliding community and a gliding certificate can be converted. THE GLIDING CERTIFICATE The Gliding Certificate is issued by the BGA under delegation from the Royal Aero Club and indicates the standard of achievement reached by the pilot. Gliding licence

Sailplane (Glider) Licensing Requirements EASA has adopted sailplane as the term to cover the area. Whilst gliding will not count towards your commercial license the experience will. Glider pilots have an intimate knowledge of what the air is doing round their sailplane, glider pilots fly with sensitivity and an understanding of air currents and if they ignore this they will end up back on the ground in a very short time.
