Depending on the degree of existing wear or corrosion the forks will usually be ground back on a centreless grinder and then chrome plated oversize to allow us to grind the fork back to its original size and tolerances. The fork rechroming process incorporates grinding the old chrome off back to the bare material if necessary to remove all the damaged chrome. The fork stanchion is then rechromed with a much harder, higher quality chrome than stock, back to factory size and finish, which means better resistance to future damage from stone chips. They are then built up with hard chromed over and above there original size.
These oversize forks are then ground again to bring them back to there original diameter. These refurbished forks on average have more hard chrome than any new set. An uneven surface due to wear and tear, dents or rust will rip up even the best quality fork oil seals as they slide across the fork , leading to oil leaks (an MoT failure point).
