Dual mass flywheel symptoms

There’s something not quite right when you shift gears, or push in the clutch pedal.

You know there’s a problem with the drivetrain, you’re just not sure what. Here’s how to tell if your dual mass flywheel is faulty. The dual mass flywheel -product of downsizing. The tendency of the auto industry to build evermore powerful engines lead to the problem of transferring that power from the engine to the transmission. Excessive DMF oscillation may cause premature wear to the arc springs within.


This typically occurs at very low engine speeds – driving in too high a gear , allowing the engine to idle for excessively long periods (e.g. to run air conditioning when parked) or frequent engine stalling are common causes. A failing dual mass flywheel will first rattle when depressing or releasing the clutch, then proceed to exhibit symptoms similar to clutch chatter even after full engagement. This malfunction will typically occur during initial engagement and while shifting through the lower gears.

Loud hammering and banging on tickover and when clutched pressed. Total failure, cannot change gear! Depends where you get it done and who you know. The chattering sound is one of the most common signs of dmf failing.


It usually sounds like you have two diesel engines under the bonnet. This is caused by the dmf springs becoming weak so the front plate vibrates against the back plate and makes a chattering noise. If you are lucky the plates jam together. DMF problems are worse when the car is cold.


When you start the car from cold and select a gear - if you hear a knocking sound when you release clutch to start. The main signs for clutch and dual mass flywheel would be one, some or all of the follow:- 1) Slipping clutch. Revs raise but car does not rise in speed , feels like you are riding the clutch whilst driving. Sometimes the smell of clutch can be smelt. Poor starting from the starter motor engaging on the starter ring on the flywheel.


And failure of drive , blamed by dealers as clutch failure and charged for as clutch failure , when really the lack of drive is because the two parts of the dual mass flywheel have separated. An OE-spec replacement dual mass flywheel will restore the vehicle’s stock performance and feel. The downside, of course, is the cost, as replacement DMFs are generally much more expensive that single mass flywheel conversion kits (if a conversion kit is available, of course).

A dual mass flywheel actually dampens excessive vibrations from the engine, which are most noticeable at idle. The engineer could move the fly wheel back and forth, clearly the unit had excess movement between the primary and secondary flywheel on the centre bolts, the fixing stud holes had clearly excessively stretched. It’s fitted mostly to diesel engines and high torque output petrol engines. A dual - mass flywheel (DMF or DMFW) is a rotating mechanical device that is used to provide continuous energy (rotational energy) in systems where the energy source is not continuous, the same way as a conventional flywheel acts, but damping any violent variation of torque or revolutions that could cause an unwanted vibration.


Odd matallic noise (sounds like a chain or bag of spanners being kicked around). The bill is usually a four digit number making this cost second only to major repairs such as engine or transmission overhauls. TDI and have had to replace the dual mass fly wheel recently. All clutches eventually wear out.


A dual - mass flywheel is a commonly used type of flywheel that is designed to minimise torsional vibration being transmitted from a car's engine to the rest of its drivetrain. It is not the same vibration problem that occurs at or near idle when people hear gears rattling. This is a higher frequency vibration that can cause the engine to trash bearings, throw rods and break pistons. You may also hear a rattle, which will disappear when you depress the clutch. DMFs can last more than 100miles but may wear out in as little as 20- it depends on the quality of the part and your driving style. The flywheel problem that you may be getting confused with is, is that of the 2.
