A new valve stem seal list sorted by valve stem diameter has been added to the back of the catalog.
This listing will enable the installer to find a seal by size and type of seal required.
The practice of selecting seals in this manner should be considered a last resort exercise when no other listing can be found. While the valves have guides or sleeves to keep combustion gases from passing through them, the seals on the top of the valves keep oil in the valve cover from being sucked down into the engine. Seals , typically made of high-strength rubber, fit over the top of the valve stem inside a small collar.
But, if too little oil flows past the valve stem seals the valve stem and valve guides will wear. Valve seals finder for. As they wear more oil can be released past the seal. Worn valve stem seals can be indicated by an increase in engine oil consumption and increased emissions.
The ‘O’ ring seals the cap, the valve stem and the collets as one. This turns the cap into a ‘table’ and no oil can run down the stem and into the guide, instead it runs off the ‘edge of the table’. But as the inlet valves wear their guides, and there is a fair drop in pressure in the inlet manifol oil inevitably gets sucked down the guides as oil-mist.

The film of oil on the valve stem is an essential part of the cooling of the exhaust valve as it fills the gap between the stem and the bore of the valve guide, acting as a medium for conducting heat out of the valve.
Because bronze valve guides have closer operating clearances, valve stem seals are not only unnecessary on the exhaust valve guides, but are actually undesirable as they reduce.
