How many days grace for car tax

Road tax - grace period? What is the grace period for car tax? Can I renew my car tax? Do you have to pay road tax on a car? When should I get my car tax reminder?


From the 22nd July a new government bill has come into action that extends the ‘grace period’ for vehicle tax discs.

Car-owners face an £fine for failing to tax their vehicle, unless it is off the road and has been declared SORN (statutory off-road notification). This can be reduced by half if paid within 28. As with late filing of a tax declaration, the penalty is issued automatically, by computer.


From the moment it runs out you have days to decide whether to SORN it or tax it. Vehicles that fall into this category will have their MOT expiry dates extended by six months. Motorists should be aware of new rules when renewing their tax disc or when their new car is taxed for the first time. Your MOT will be automatically extended for months because of coronavirus.


Is there a period of grace for an MOT?

Some motorists may be under the impression that there is a period of grace regarding renewing a lapsed MOT, but this is sadly not the case. The only exception to this is if you already have a booking for the vehicle to be tested and are driving it to the MOT test centre. Legislation provides a period of days grace if your vehicle was previously taxed and you renew online.


Police will show that the tax has been renewed. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Authority (DVSA) therefore agreed to change the legal requirements for an MOT during the pandemic, leading to what is known as the ‘MOT grace period’. Car tax costs are variable from vehicle to vehicle and is based a number of facts. These include the make, model, year your car was made and the value of it and soon to be what fuel type - diesel.


There are no days grace , however, it is unlikely that you will be prosecuted in the first days as long as your tax is backdated to when the last disc expired. If however you have an accident, or commit some other traffic offence then your failure to display a tax disc will almost certainly come up in coourt. If the car doesn’t have either of these, you won’t be able to buy tax. Speak to your car insurer at least the day before, and they can ensure the database is updated with your new car ’s details. There’s no ‘ grace period’ in which you can arrange tax after buying a used car , so you should have car tax in place before driving away.

Any days grace on tax ? Where a police officer detects a vehicle without tax and it is outside of the 14-day grace period provided in the legislation, a referral is made to the DVLA. Despite the working days thingy on the website they are actually quite efficient. You used to get days grace but I think thats vanished. If the vehicle is registered as new on 31st March and taxed for months, the tax will start on 1st March and run for months from there.


My car tax expired on 30th April. I paid the tax online as soon as I found the letter so the payment was days late. You get a 21-day grace period if you have not renewed the expired motor vehicle licence.


The grace period is calculated from the expiry date of the current licence disc. In Northern Ireland you also need an insurance. How to tax your car?
