Tuff tray play gives children the opportunity to explore and discover independently whilst using their imagination and creativity. They are really versatile, have a wide range of uses and are perfect for small world play, messy play and sand and water play. This started off as a beach small world and then we added rubbish to demonstrate human effects on environments.
It was a really fun effective way to get across how important reducing our rubbish is. Can you think of any more ideas for us? Using the tuff tray for sensory play along with, problem solving, early mathematics, scientific exploration, process art, physical development, independence and empowerment of children’s ideas and creativity along with many, many more attributes can only be a good thing.
They don’t always have to be complicated or beautifully presented or even have a rationale as the children will often. Tuff spots are a great way for all children to explore a range of activities and materials at a low level. Babies and preschool aged children can explore resources in the tray by lying or sitting on the floor to access the tray.

Here are of our favourite ideas from parents across the community. Mix up some moon sand using the basic recipe of cups of flour to cup of baby oil and place this into the centre of the tuff tray. Then add in a couple of cars or diggers.
